Increased accuracy in climate impact studies by incorporating forest management practices within a process-based regional ecosystem modelling framework

چکیده
Process-based simulation models of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics are increasingly being applied as practical tools in forest management. Regional applications of such models are, however, very limited to date. This study presents and tests the performance of a process-based regional ecosystem modelling framework, LPJ-GUESS, which incorporates forest management practices. The model is driven by historical climate data and applied on a grid across Sweden to simulate the infl uence of recent historical management practices on the forest structure and its productivity. The study focuses on species-level interactions and investigates how stem wood volume increment has changed during the historical time period. The performance of the model is evaluated by comparing the simulated forest composition and growth with the observed forest inventory data from Swedish forest regions. The model estimates tend to be somewhat low in the southern and high in the northern part of the country, but generally comparable with observations in all regions of Sweden. Our results emphasize the potential that models like LPJ-GUESS offers to support forestry practice, especially with regard to the choice of species and management regime in a changing environment.

Self-organising map methods in integrated modelling of environmental and economic systems
The need for better techniques, tools and practices to analyse ecological and economic systems in an integrated framework has never been so great. Self-organising map (SOM) methods are utilised for this purpose with two examples using regional and global data (ecological and economic) compiled by state and international institutions i.e. Waikato Regional Council and the World Bank. Sustainable ...

Although forest ecosystems are fundamental sources of services and global biodiversity, their capacity to maintain these benefits in the future is potentially threatened by anthropogenic impacts such as climate change, land use, and unsustainable management practices. Thus far, studies focusing on forests and their services have gained less attention compared with studies on other biomes. Addit...
متن کاملSimulation of Water and Carbon Fluxes in Agro- and forest Ecosystems at the Regional Scale
To investigate effects of different land use management practices on carbon fluxes at the regional scale we developed an integrated model by coupling an ecohydrological river basin model SWIM (Soil and Water Integrated Model) and a soil organic matter model SCN (Soil-Carbon-Nitrogen model). The latter is a submodel of the forest growth model 4C. The extended integrated model combines hydrologic...
متن کاملAssessing Interactions Among Changing Climate, Management, and Disturbance in Forests: A Macrosystems Approach
Forests are experiencing simultaneous changes in climate, disturbance regimes, and management, all of which affect ecosystem function. Climate change is shifting ranges and altering forest productivity. Disturbance regimes are changing with the potential for novel interactions among disturbance types. In some areas, forest management practices are intensifying, whereas in other areas, lower-imp...
متن کاملForest microclimate modelling using gap and canopy properties derived from LiDAR and hyperspectral imagery
The creation of gaps in forest canopies can dramatically change the microclimate and soil water balance which strongly influences the process of regeneration and biodiversity within forest ecosystems. Hence, understanding the microclimatic conditions in canopy gaps is a prerequisite in developing and improving techniques for forest management and conservation practices. However, information is ...
